Newton, MA, a suburb of Boston, is comprised of roughly 80,000 residents. Just over 18.3 square miles in size, this small town packs a lot of punch when it comes to annual events. Let’s take a look at some of those events throughout the calendar year.
Top Newton Spring Events
Starting in March, Newton gets creative with its Newton Festival of the Arts. The festival runs from late March through mid-June and is comprised of various events nearly every day.Each April Newton hosts the Heartbreak Hill Road Race. This one mile run up and down historic Heartbreak Hill starts at Newton City Hall and is open to the entire family. In 2017 Newton hosted its first annual Hot Stepz Magazine (HSM) Model Search 2017. This search for the next hit model is open to all US residents and prides itself on giving entrants a platform for showing leading modeling agencies their talent.In May Newton hosts an annual essay and art contest for youth called, “I Got Bank.”
Hot Summer Events
In the Summer months, Newton prides itself on being neighborly. The city encourages and supports neighborhood block parties all throughout the Summer. No Summer is complete without a 4th of July party. Newton’s 4th of July festival includes parades for the kids, an open air market, amusement rides, entertainment in the town gazebo, and of course fireworks.
Speaking of the little ones, Newton has ‘Tuesday’s for Kids’ during the month of July. Each Tuesday a kid-friendly performance is given at the Newton Centre Green. Newton Centre Green also hosts a Heritage Festival each Sunday in July.
Fun Fall Events
Each September, city of Newton hosts Newton Village Day and Jazz Festival on Walnut Street between Washington Street and Washington Park. This festival has two stages, music and dance performances, local cultural organizations, craft and food vendors, a silent auction benefitting local businesses and a variety of kids activities.In October, Newton has the Harvest Fair. This fair has craft vendors, pumpkin decorating, kiddie amusement rides, face painting and entertainment from well-known and local artists.
For Halloween, Newton holds a window painting contest for kids ages 3-8 and gives prizes to those judged to be the best. Also in October Newton holds the annual Roman Totenberg Young Strings Competition. All events take place at the Newton Cultural Center at City Hall, and there are age groups from ages 8 through 18. Afterwards, a Winners’ Gala Concert and reception is held.
Winter Events – The Cold Can’t Stop Newton
In December Newton holds their annual Music for Food Concert. This classical music concert can be found at the Newton Theological School. Also in December, the annual Holiday Craft Fair is held at Newton City Hall. This fair boasts original art and craft pieces created by New England artisans. Newton’s annual holiday lighting ceremony is on in December as well and is free to attend at the War Memorial Stadium.
Edmand’s Park Poetry is a poetry project which is comprised of nature poems by living poets located throughout the park. A volunteer group within Newton has designed and maintained gardens throughout the city. It is best known for the All-America Selections Display Garden in Newton Centre.
